One of my favorite parts about Arizona
is the Monsoon Season!
We get like 350 days a year of
sunshine and clear skies.
Which is fabulous.
But also means we highly enjoy the few storms!!
We've had a pretty mild monsoon season so far.
But Saturday night it really hit!
Right when our friends were coming up for dinner and swimming.
A Haboob (sand storm) was rolling in from the west.
So dinner was postponed as they were stuck in it with no visibility.
We figured within 20 minutes it would be up to Anthem.
Well at the same time a huge dark storm was coming in from the northeast.
Somehow the Haboob missed us.
But the Monsoon storm didn't!
Within 15 mins it was pouring.
You never know how long these are going to last.
So we threw on our rain gear and excitedly ran outside!
But it didn't stop after 10 mins.
Instead it just kept raining harder and harder.
Which meant the kids were soaked and more rain gear was needed!
As we're watching the storm, a gust of wind came in
and knocked a plank of wood off the swingset roof which landed dangerously close to us!
Then along with the intense thunder and lightning
we decided it might be safer to watch indoors.
About that time,
the Direct TV signal got knocked out.
Anden threw his arms in the air in complete desperation and whined,
"AHHH great! Now we don't have any cartoons!"
I looked at him and rolled my eyes.
I spared him the story about how I walked uphill both ways in snow to school
and had only 3 TV channels
of which none showed cartoons 24 hrs/day.
(ok maybe only the last part is true)
So we went back to playing outside since heaven forbid the TV didn't work.
We easily decided that swimming was no longer an option.
Dinner was still up in the air.
Then the power got knocked out.
Meaning no A/C.
It took about 2 mins before I loaded up the kids and headed south.
Apparently there wasn't a drop of rain 15 mins away.
So we met our friends for dinner instead.
But that meant we had to brave driving in the storm.
Which moved south along with us.
Let me say it's now in my top 20 list of not so brilliant ideas.
We literally hydroplaned ourselves down the freeway
going 35mph.
My knuckles have finally regained color.
But what an adventure!
It's the closest I'll get to a sudden snowstorm.
And I love those just as much!
