Well it’s that time again for the annual
Pinewood Derby!!
Our ward decided again to allow the girls in the same age
bracket to compete.
Anden wasn’t too thrilled about this.
Because that meant Taylee was now old enough to officially
compete against him!
But they both worked on their cars diligently.
Ryan and Jeremy both took turns spending hours on these cars
too!
Finally they got them perfected, weighed in and ready to
compete!
Anden was SO into this and meticulous about every detail of
his car.
Taylee….well she basically could have cared less except that
her car was pretty.
This year the format was a bit different than previous
years.
I finally got released from my Scout calling (hallelujah!!)
So I wasn’t in charge of the Pinewood Derby this year.
They decided to not have a separate girls division
And instead let everyone compete against everyone.
With only 1st-4th place winners!
Not even den division winners but just 4 winners total.
(yes I immediately saw problems with that since this is a
SCOUT activity and now potentially the girls could win all the awards…but hey
it wasn’t my problem this year!)
So Anden really felt the pressure to
1-
Beat Taylee, 2 – Beat Taylee and 3 – Beat Taylee
and place in the top 4.
Taylee felt no pressure and was just happy to be included!
They both had really successful races and both took 1st
or 2nd in most of the heats!!
Then one of the heats had them racing against each other.
Uh Oh…my heart sank for a minute.
They were neck and neck until the final stretch...
and yes Taylee’s car beat Anden’s car!!
He definitely wasn’t thrilled about that!
But the races continued on.
Finally they finished all the heats and announced the top 4
finalists.
Well long story short….guess who made it and who didn’t?
Yep Taylee made it into the Finals and somehow Anden didn’t!
(seriously though he must have barely missed the cut off
because he had beat some of the kids that did make it to the finals)
Let’s just say he was NOT HAPPY about his sister beating him
and
his era of pinewood derby racing ending in shambles.
(this is his last year to compete)
I tried to console him while still cheering for Taylee
during the final heats.
Quite the tug on a Mother’s heart!
Taylee was all smiles all evening!
She was such a good sport and cheering for everyone and just
having a good old time.
Well she ended up taking 3rd place overall out of
about 50 racers!!
So at least we had one happy child that night! J
Yeah! Way to go Taylee!
(and Ryan and Jeremy lol)
I did manage to make Anden force a smile afterwards.
Luckily by the next day Anden had moved on to a new interest
and the stinging pinewood derby races faded in his memory! :)
